How much does website maintenance cost in Ghana per month?
The short answer
Website maintenance in Ghana costs GHS 150 to GHS 2,000 or more a month on the plans Ghanaian agencies publish in 2026, before hosting and domain renewals. Entry plans covering updates, backups and security cost GHS 150 to GHS 500. Mid plans with edit hours and faster response cost GHS 400 to GHS 1,000. Premium plans run GHS 800 to GHS 2,000 or more. Freelancers bill GHS 50 to GHS 200 an hour.
Ghanaian agencies publish maintenance plans from GHS 150 to more than GHS 2,000 a month. Faciotech, BuiltFound, Stayplain Studio and Kolonell each list tiers, and the tiers overlap. This guide splits a month of maintenance into its tasks, shows who does each one and what it costs, and adds the hosting and domain lines that renew every year.
Tribal House is a brand and web design studio in Accra. Every number below comes from a price page or report we read on 18 October 2026, named where it appears. Our guide to website cost in Ghana covers the build. This one covers the years after launch.
What does website maintenance cost in Ghana per month?
Website maintenance in Ghana costs GHS 150 to GHS 2,000 or more a month on published 2026 plans. Entry plans sit at GHS 150 to GHS 500 and cover updates, backups and basic security. Mid plans run GHS 400 to GHS 1,000 and add edit hours and faster response. Premium plans start near GHS 800.
| Provider | Entry (GHS a month) | Middle (GHS a month) | Top (GHS a month) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Faciotech (published ranges) | 150 to 400 | 400 to 800 | 800 to 2,000+ |
| BuiltFound (published ranges) | 200 to 500 | 500 to 1,000 | 1,000 to 1,500 |
| Stayplain Studio | 300 (Basic Care) | 550 (Pro Care) | 800 (Elite Care) |
| Kolonell | 400 (Essential) | 800 (Business) | 2,000 (Premium) |
WebSys Technology gives a wider band of GHS 200 to 1,500 a month. Kolonell lists FCFA prices beside its cedi prices, and the two sets do not match the exchange rate its own article states, so read its cedi figures as a guide.
What does a month of website maintenance include?
A month of maintenance covers seven jobs: software updates, backups, uptime monitoring, security scans, certificate checks, small content edits and a report. The top published tiers include all seven. Entry plans drop the edit hours, the firewall or the fast response, so compare the tasks line by line before you compare the prices.
| Task | What it involves | Who does it | Published price or frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Updates | CMS, plugin and theme updates, tested after they go live | Freelancer or agency | Included in every Stayplain and Kolonell tier |
| Backups | A copy of files and database kept away from the host | Host, plugin or provider | Free with many hosts. Premium plugin GHS 150 to 400 a year, managed off-site GHS 300 to 600 a year (Faciotech) |
| Uptime monitoring | An automated check that alerts someone when the site goes down | Software, with alerts to the provider | UptimeRobot free plan: 50 monitors checked every 5 minutes |
| Security | Malware scans, firewall and login protection | Provider or security service | Professional monitoring GHS 500 to 2,000 a year (Faciotech) |
| SSL certificate | Renewal of the certificate behind the browser padlock | Host software, checked by the provider | Let's Encrypt: no charge, 90-day certificates |
| Small edits | Text, photos, prices and staff pages | Provider within plan hours, or your team in the CMS | 1 hour (Stayplain Pro Care), 2 hours (Stayplain Elite Care, Kolonell Business) |
| Reporting | Updates applied, backups taken, downtime and fixes | Provider | A report each month in all three Stayplain tiers |
Faciotech advises a backup at least once a week, stored in a different place from the hosting server. Kolonell's Essential plan backs up each week, its Business plan each day and its Premium plan in real time.
Who should do each maintenance task?
Your host, your provider and your own team share the work. The host runs the server, the certificate software and often a basic backup. A freelancer or agency applies updates, watches security and fixes faults. Your team owns the domain, the logins and the content, and keeps all three in the business's name.
- Your team: domain and hosting accounts, renewal dates, the card or mobile money wallet on file, and copy changes you can make in the CMS.
- Your host: server uptime, the control panel and any backup or free certificate in the plan. Luminweb lists free SSL in every hosting plan.
- Your provider: updates, a test after each update, security scans, fixes and the report at the end of the month.
Write the split down. An unpaid renewal or a skipped update falls between two parties when nobody owns it. Settle this split before you sign, as part of how you choose a web design company in Accra.
How do freelancer, agency and retainer prices compare?
Freelancers in Ghana bill GHS 50 to GHS 200 an hour and agencies GHS 100 to GHS 400, according to WebSys Technology. Agency care plans run GHS 150 to GHS 2,000 or more a month. Ongoing content management, the closest published figure to a retainer, costs GHS 500 to GHS 2,000 a month on Faciotech's figures.
| Provider type | Published price (GHS) | What you buy | Source | Ask about |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | 50 to 200 an hour | Time, billed per task | WebSys Technology | Cover during illness, travel or a busy month |
| Agency care plan | 150 to 2,000+ a month | Fixed tasks and a set response time | Faciotech, BuiltFound, Stayplain Studio, Kolonell | Response time in writing |
| Agency work by the hour | 100 to 400 an hour | Fixes and changes outside the plan | WebSys Technology | The rate for out-of-plan work |
| Retainer or content management | 500 to 2,000 a month | A block of design, content or development time | Faciotech | Whether unused hours roll over |
We found no Ghanaian freelancer who publishes a fixed monthly maintenance price. Freelancers quote by the hour or by the job, so ask for a cap on hours each month.
Which recurring costs sit outside the maintenance fee?
Hosting, domain renewal, certificates and licences renew on their own schedule, and most plans above exclude them. Published figures put shared and basic hosting at GHS 60 to GHS 650 a year and a .com renewal at GHS 80 to GHS 190. Sources disagree on .com.gh, from GHS 50 to GHS 800 a year.
| Line | Published price (GHS) | How often | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| .com domain | 80 to 150 | Per year | Faciotech |
| .com domain | 170 to 190 | Per year | BuiltFound |
| .com.gh domain | 50 to 120 | Per year | Faciotech |
| .com.gh domain | 400 to 800 (its estimator shows 700) | Per year | BuiltFound |
| Shared hosting | 60 to 200 | Per year | Faciotech |
| Basic hosting | 200 to 500 | Per year | BuiltFound |
| Hosting with a free domain and free SSL | 350 to 650 | Per year | Luminweb |
| E-commerce hosting | 1,500 to 2,500 | Per year | BuiltFound |
| SSL certificate | 0 (Let's Encrypt) to 800 | Per year | Let's Encrypt, BuiltFound |
| Premium plugin and theme licences | 0 to 1,500 | Per year | Faciotech |
The .com.gh gap is wide: BuiltFound's floor is more than three times Faciotech's ceiling. Ask your registrar for the renewal price in writing before you pick the extension.
Why do plugin and theme updates matter so much?
Plugins carry most of the known risk on WordPress sites. Patchstack counted 11,334 new vulnerabilities in the WordPress ecosystem in 2025, a 42% rise on 2024. It found 91% in plugins, 9% in themes and 6 in WordPress core, all six low priority. A site that skips updates stays open after a fix ships.
Patchstack also reports that 46% of those vulnerabilities had no fix from the developer in time for public disclosure. An update cannot close those holes, so your provider needs a firewall rule or a plan to remove the plugin. Patchstack rated 4,124 of the 2025 vulnerabilities, 36%, serious enough to need its own protection rules.
Ask your provider how many plugins your site runs and which ones it could drop. Fewer plugins means fewer updates to test each month.
What does uptime and security monitoring cost?
Basic uptime monitoring costs nothing: UptimeRobot's free plan checks 50 monitors every 5 minutes. Its Solo plan costs US$12 a month on annual billing, priced in US dollars, and checks every 60 seconds. Security costs more. Faciotech puts professional monitoring at GHS 500 to GHS 2,000 a year, and Sucuri sells cleanup plans from US$229 a year.
UptimeRobot describes its free plan as good for hobby and non-profit projects, so a business site should budget for the paid tier or a care plan that includes monitoring. Stayplain Studio includes 24/7 uptime monitoring in all three plans, with a weekly security scan at Basic Care, a firewall at Pro Care and a WAF with CDN at Elite Care.
Sucuri prices its plans in US dollars. The Basic Platform at US$229 a year includes unlimited manual malware cleanups with an estimated 30-hour response. Pro at US$339 cuts the estimate to 12 hours, and Business at US$549 to 6 hours. Sucuri calls these response times estimates.
What does it cost to skip website maintenance?
A hacked site costs GHS 2,400 to GHS 6,400 to repair on Kolonell's figures and GHS 2,000 to more than GHS 10,000 on Faciotech's. A year of entry-level maintenance costs GHS 1,800 to GHS 6,000 at GHS 150 to GHS 500 a month. Lost sales and bookings during the outage come on top of the repair bill.
| Incident | Published repair cost (GHS) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Hacked site or code injection | 2,400 to 6,400 (average 4,000) | Kolonell |
| Hacked site clean-up | 2,000 to 10,000+ in the article, 5,000 to 15,000 in its FAQ | Faciotech |
| Site down after a broken plugin | 800 to 2,000 | Kolonell |
| Data loss with no backup | 1,600 to 8,000 | Kolonell |
| Expired SSL certificate | 400, plus lost trust | Kolonell |
| Domain renewed after the redemption period | 500 to 1,000+ | Faciotech |
Faciotech gives two ranges for the same clean-up on one page, and we show both. Kolonell describes an Accra restaurant that paid GHS 4,400 for repairs and estimated GHS 2,400 in lost bookings after eight days offline.
For .com and other generic domains, ICANN requires registrars to send renewal reminders about one month and one week before expiry. Registries then hold a deleted name for a 30-day Redemption Grace Period, and registrars must display their restore fees on their websites. ICANN's policy does not cover .com.gh, so ask your registrar for its terms.
What does a year of maintenance cost for a small business site?
A small business site on Stayplain Studio's Pro Care plan with Luminweb's Standard hosting costs GHS 7,000 a year, about GHS 583 a month. A freelancer billing two hours a month, plus managed off-site backups, costs GHS 1,900 to GHS 5,800 a year, with US$144 on top for paid uptime monitoring.
| Line | Agency care plan (GHS a year) | Freelancer by the hour (GHS a year) |
|---|---|---|
| Stayplain Pro Care, 550 × 12 | 6,600 | Not used |
| Freelancer, 2 hours × 50 to 200 × 12 | Not used | 1,200 to 4,800 |
| Luminweb Standard hosting, with free domain and SSL | 400 | 400 |
| Managed off-site backups (Faciotech range) | Included in the plan | 300 to 600 |
| Uptime monitoring, UptimeRobot Solo | Included in the plan | US$144 (source currency) |
| Total | 7,000 | 1,900 to 5,800, plus US$144 |
Agency route: GHS 550 × 12 = GHS 6,600, plus GHS 400 for hosting = GHS 7,000, or GHS 583 a month. Freelancer route: 2 hours × GHS 50 to 200 = GHS 100 to 400 a month. Over 12 months that comes to GHS 1,200 to 4,800, then add GHS 400 for hosting and GHS 300 to 600 for backups: GHS 1,900 to 5,800.
Two hours a month matches the edit allowance in Kolonell's Business plan. The totals are our arithmetic on the published prices. The freelancer route costs less on paper and carries one gap: no fixed response time, where Stayplain's Pro Care promises a 4-hour emergency response. One hack at Kolonell's average repair cost of GHS 4,000 equals more than seven months of Pro Care.
How does an online store change the maintenance budget?
An online store raises every line. BuiltFound lists e-commerce hosting at GHS 1,500 to GHS 2,500 a year against GHS 200 to GHS 500 for basic hosting. Faciotech's sample annual budget for an e-commerce site comes to about GHS 16,860, against about GHS 2,100 for a small brochure site and GHS 6,320 for a services site with a blog.
Checkout, payment plugins, stock levels and order emails all need a test after each update, because a broken checkout stops sales on the day it breaks. Our guide to e-commerce website cost in Ghana covers the build and the payment fees.
What should a website maintenance agreement in Ghana include?
A maintenance agreement should list the tasks, their frequency, the response time, the edit hours and the price of work outside the plan. It should also name who holds the domain, hosting and admin logins. Stayplain Studio and Kolonell publish response times from 2 to 72 hours, so ask for yours in writing.
- Tasks and frequency: updates, backups and where they are stored, uptime checks, security scans and the report.
- Response time: hours to answer an outage or a hack, and whether weekends count.
- Edit hours: hours included each month, and whether unused hours carry over.
- Out-of-plan rate: WebSys Technology puts agency rates at GHS 100 to GHS 400 an hour.
- Account ownership: domain, hosting and CMS admin in the business's name, with the provider added as a user.
- Exit terms: the notice period and a handover of backups and logins.
If every month goes on patching old plugins and fixing the same faults, the site may need more than upkeep. Read our guide to website redesign in Accra before you renew the plan.
What does Tribal House charge for website maintenance?
Tribal House offers a Monthly retainer from US$1,500 a month for ongoing design, development and motion work after launch. The retainer suits a site that keeps growing and needs new pages, features and assets each month. Owners who need updates and backups alone will pay less on a care plan from the ranges above.
We send a written scope after a 30-minute discovery call. Projects are invoiced 40% at kickoff, 40% during production and 20% at final delivery. Brand and website projects start at US$6,000 and ship in four to eight weeks, and each launch includes Loom walkthroughs, a CMS guide and a launch checklist so your team can run the site after handover. Project sprints for one defined outcome start at US$2,500.

Frequently asked questions
- Is website maintenance worth paying for if my site is small?
- An entry plan costs GHS 1,800 to GHS 6,000 a year at published rates. One hack repair costs GHS 2,400 to GHS 6,400 on Kolonell's figures, before lost sales. For a site that brings in enquiries, a year of the plan costs about the same as one incident.
- Can I maintain my own website?
- Yes, if someone on your team applies updates, checks backups and renews the domain and hosting on time. Let's Encrypt certificates cost nothing, and UptimeRobot's free plan checks 50 monitors every 5 minutes. Budget developer time for fixes at GHS 50 to GHS 200 an hour, the freelancer range WebSys Technology publishes.
- How often should a website be backed up?
- Faciotech advises at least once a week, stored away from the hosting server. Stayplain Studio's plans run automated backups each day, and Kolonell's Premium plan backs up in real time. A store that takes orders every day needs a backup every day.
- Does my hosting plan cover maintenance?
- Hosting and maintenance are separate services at the providers above. Luminweb's hosting plans at GHS 350 to GHS 650 a year include a free domain and free SSL, and the page does not mention backups or updates. Stayplain Studio and Kolonell sell maintenance as its own plan.
- How much does it cost to fix a hacked website in Ghana?
- Kolonell lists GHS 2,400 to GHS 6,400, with an average of GHS 4,000. Faciotech lists GHS 2,000 to more than GHS 10,000 in one section and GHS 5,000 to GHS 15,000 in its FAQ. Sucuri's plans, priced in US dollars, include unlimited cleanups from US$229 a year.
- What happens if my domain expires?
- Under ICANN's policy for .com and other generic domains, the registrar interrupts the site and email for at least the last eight days the name can still be renewed. A deleted name then enters a 30-day Redemption Grace Period. Faciotech puts renewal after the redemption period at GHS 500 to more than GHS 1,000.
- Do I need to pay for an SSL certificate?
- Let's Encrypt issues certificates at no charge, valid for 90 days, and Luminweb includes free SSL in its hosting plans. BuiltFound lists paid certificates at GHS 150 to GHS 800 a year, and Faciotech puts extended validation certificates at GHS 200 to GHS 500 a year.
