How much does an e-commerce website cost in Ghana in 2026?

By Tribal House Published 15 min read

The short answer

An e-commerce website in Ghana costs GHS 2,000 to GHS 20,000 for a template store, GHS 12,000 to GHS 40,000 for a custom design and GHS 36,000 to GHS 85,000 or more for a premium build in 2026, on agencies' published prices. Running costs can exceed the build. A template store selling GHS 50,000 a month pays GHS 23,020 to GHS 46,090 in year one, with gateway fees at 1.95% to 2.6%.

Ghanaian agencies publish e-commerce build prices from GHS 2,000 to GHS 85,000 and more. One studio, Kolonell, published at least five guides to the same question in August 2026, and their ranges disagree with each other. A build price also hides the larger bill: hosting, support and the fee a payment gateway takes from every sale.

Tribal House is a brand and web studio in Accra. This guide sorts the published ranges into one tier table, adds twelve months of running costs and works through a store selling GHS 50,000 a month, line by line. Build prices come from BuiltFound, Ghana Web Designs and Kolonell. Gateway rates come from the pricing pages Paystack, Hubtel and Flutterwave publish, checked on 18 October 2026.

What does an e-commerce website cost in Ghana in 2026?

Ghanaian agencies publish GHS 2,000 to GHS 20,000 for a template store, GHS 12,000 to GHS 40,000 for a store with custom design and GHS 36,000 to GHS 85,000 or more for a premium build. Most starter figures cluster between GHS 3,500 and GHS 15,000, the range BuiltFound prints in its price breakdown table.

The table groups each source's figures under the tier it describes. The tiers overlap because each studio draws its lines in a different place. Kolonell's custom tier in one guide starts at GHS 12,000, the same figure as its starter tier in another. Treat each band as a guide and compare scope before price.

Why do published e-commerce prices in Ghana disagree?

The ranges disagree because each page prices a different scope, and some pages contradict themselves. Kolonell published at least five e-commerce cost guides between 1 and 25 August 2026, with starter prices from GHS 6,000 to GHS 17,000. BuiltFound and Ghana Web Designs each print two different shop ranges on a single page.

The 10 August guide prices Accra stores in CFA francs and gives no cedi figure. The 1 August guide sets an Abidjan column in FCFA beside its Accra column. Neither figure converts to cedis without an exchange rate the guides do not state, so this post leaves them in FCFA.

Kolonell is not alone. BuiltFound lists e-commerce websites at GH¢ 3,500 to 25,000 in its package list and GH¢ 3,500 to 15,000+ in its breakdown table. Ghana Web Designs prints Ghc2,000 to 10,000 in its pricing table and says in its FAQ that a store starts around GHS 5,000 and reaches GHS 15,000 or more.

Gateway fees show the same drift. Kolonell's guides put mobile money or Paystack fees at about 1%, about 1.5% or 1.5% to 2%. The Ghana pricing page Paystack publishes lists 1.95%. Take every rate from the gateway's own page and treat a rate in an agency blog as an estimate.

What does each store tier include?

A template store reuses a finished theme with your logo and colours. A custom design store starts from your brand, and a premium build adds features a theme cannot hold. Kolonell's 6 August guide gives build times of 10 to 15 days, 3 to 5 weeks and 6 to 9 weeks for its three tiers.

Template store: GHS 2,000 to 20,000

Expect a theme, a product catalogue, a cart, order emails and a checkout that takes mobile money and cards. Kolonell's 10 August starter tier covers 50 products with MTN MoMo and Telecel payments. This tier suits a seller moving from Instagram or WhatsApp orders to a site that takes payment without a chat.

The low end of the range assumes you write the product text and supply the photos. Ask the agency to confirm that in writing, because a quote that covers neither will grow once work starts.

Custom design store: GHS 12,000 to 40,000

A designer builds the pages around your brand and your best-selling products. Delivery zones, discount codes and stock alerts need setup and testing. Kolonell's growth tier in the same guide removes the product cap, which moves more of the cost into catalogue structure, filters and search.

Premium or custom platform: GHS 36,000 to 85,000 or more

Multi-currency pricing, customer accounts, wholesale price lists and links to stock or accounting systems belong here. Kolonell prices a custom tier from GHS 85,000. A store at this level needs a support contract from launch day, because each integration can break when the system on the other side changes.

Stores that sell into Nigeria or Côte d'Ivoire need extra payment methods and currencies. Our guide to website design for West Africa lists them by country.

How much does product count add to the price?

BuiltFound's estimator includes up to 40 products in its e-commerce option and adds GH₵600 for 40 to 100 products, GH₵1,500 for 100 to 200 and GH₵3,000 for more than 200. The e-commerce option itself adds GH₵2,500 to the base site, with GH₵1,500 a year in maintenance.

Product count drives cost through data entry, photography and category design. Each product needs a title, a price, variants, a description and at least one photo. A shop with 150 products in three sizes each holds 450 variants for someone to enter and check before launch.

Launch with the products that sell. Add the long tail once orders come in and you can see which categories earn their place on the menu.

What recurring costs does an online store carry?

An online store pays for a domain, hosting, a security certificate, support and a fee on every sale. BuiltFound lists e-commerce hosting at GH¢ 1,500 to 2,500 a year, and Kolonell's guides put managed hosting at GHS 150 to 680 a month. The gateway fee grows with sales and overtakes the fixed lines once a store trades.

Kolonell's lowest hosting figure, GHS 150 a month, comes to GHS 1,800 a year, close to BuiltFound's GH¢ 1,500. Its highest, GHS 680 a month, comes to GHS 8,160 a year. Ask any host what the price covers: backups, a content delivery network and SSL appear in some packages and not in others.

Flutterwave states that its prices exclude VAT and other local taxes. Paystack and Hubtel publish no setup fee and no account fee for collections, and Paystack settles your balance free on the next working day. A later guide in this series compares the three gateways on more than price.

Register the domain and the gateway account in your company's name. The gateway pays out to the account holder, and moving a domain held by an agency needs that agency's cooperation.

What does an online store cost over its first 12 months?

A template store with standard support costs GHS 11,320 to GHS 30,490 in its first year before gateway fees, on BuiltFound's published ranges. Add gateway fees for a store selling GHS 50,000 a month and the total reaches GHS 23,020 to GHS 46,090. A custom design store on Kolonell's figures costs GHS 43,500 to GHS 81,000.

The template columns use BuiltFound's breakdown range for the build, its .com, SSL and e-commerce hosting ranges, and its standard support tier at GH¢ 500 to 1,000 a month. The custom columns use Kolonell's 13 August guide: its growth build, hosting at GHS 150 to 600 a month, maintenance at GHS 400 to 1,500 a month and about GHS 200 a year for domain and SSL. Gateway fees run from 1.95% to 2.6% of GHS 600,000. The totals are our arithmetic.

Kolonell's 13 August guide says first-year cost reaches 1.5 to 2 times the build. That multiple holds for a store with modest sales. In the low template column, gateway fees alone come to GHS 11,700, more than three times the GHS 3,500 build, and the year costs 6.6 times the build.

Plan the budget around sales volume first and the build second. A cheap build with high sales still produces a large first-year bill.

What does a store selling GHS 50,000 a month pay, fee by fee?

A template store selling GHS 50,000 a month pays about GHS 1,918 to GHS 3,841 a month in running costs, or 3.84% to 7.68% of sales, with the build spread over the first year. The gateway fee is the largest single line: GHS 975 a month at 1.95% and GHS 1,300 at 2.6%.

For every GHS 100 of sales, the low case keeps GHS 96.16 after these costs and the high case keeps GHS 92.32. Stock, delivery, staff and tax come out of that balance. Year two drops the build line, so on the same sales the template store costs GHS 19,520 to GHS 31,090, if renewals hold at year-one prices.

The fee line moves with your payment mix. Hubtel's business-pays schedule charges 1.95% on MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and online cards and 2.5% on AT Money. A store taking GHS 5,000 a month through AT Money pays GHS 125 on that share, against GHS 97.50 at 1.95%. Flutterwave charges 4.8% on international cards, so GHS 5,000 of foreign card sales costs GHS 240 there.

Run this table with your own sales figure before you sign a build quote. The build is the one line you pay once, and the fee line keeps growing with every order.

Does Shopify cost less than a custom-built store in Ghana?

Shopify charges a plan fee in US dollars and, for Ghanaian stores, a transaction fee on top of the gateway's. The Shopify pricing page lists Basic at US$39 a month, or US$29 a month on annual billing, with a 2% fee on third-party payment providers. Shopify Payments does not list Ghana among its countries.

Shopify's help centre says stores in unlisted countries need a third-party payment provider, so every Ghanaian Shopify sale carries that platform fee. The prices below are in US dollars, as Shopify publishes them.

Shopify planBilled each month (USD)Annual billing, per month (USD)Third-party transaction feeFee on GHS 50,000 of sales
Basic39292%GHS 1,000
Grow105791%GHS 500
Advanced3992990.6%GHS 300

On Basic, the GHS 50,000 store pays GHS 1,000 a month to Shopify and GHS 975 to a gateway at 1.95%: GHS 1,975 in fees, 3.95% of sales, before the plan fee. Grow halves the Shopify fee to GHS 500 for US$50 more a month on annual billing. The trade pays off or not depending on the cedi to dollar rate on the day your card is charged.

Kolonell's 6 August guide prices a Shopify-style subscription at about GHS 180 a month with a fee of about 2%. Shopify prices its own plans in dollars, so check the live page before you budget. The same guide lists no platform fee on a custom build, only the mobile money operator's charge.

Shopify suits a seller who wants to launch fast on a theme and accepts a percentage on every sale. At GHS 50,000 a month on Basic, that percentage comes to GHS 12,000 a year, enough to pay for a template build three times over at BuiltFound's low figure.

Which costs do e-commerce quotes in Ghana leave out?

Quotes leave out product photography, product data entry, delivery setup, renewals and tax. Ghana Web Designs notes that maintenance often sits outside the design price and that payment gateways raise the build cost. Ask each provider to mark every line below as included, excluded or priced as an extra before you compare totals.

  • Product photos. A catalogue of 100 products needs 100 sets of photos shot in the same light and on the same background. Price this before the build.
  • Product data. Someone writes titles, descriptions, sizes and prices, then loads them. BuiltFound's estimator charges more as the catalogue passes 40, 100 and 200 products.
  • Delivery rules. Zones, rates and the handover to riders or couriers need setup and testing for each region you serve.
  • Gateway account. Open it in your company's name in week one, so payment testing does not hold up launch.
  • Renewals. Domains, hosting, SSL, themes and plugins renew each year. BuiltFound's estimator shows basic hosting free in year one and GH₵200 a year after, so year two can cost more than year one suggests.
  • Tax. Flutterwave states its fees exclude VAT and other local taxes. Ask your accountant how VAT applies to your sales and to gateway fees.
  • Marketing. A store with no traffic sells nothing. Kolonell lists SEO at GHS 450 to 1,800 a month in one guide and GHS 1,000 to 4,000 in another.

How can you cut the cost of an online store without losing sales?

Cut the cost by launching a smaller catalogue on a proven theme, offering the payment methods your buyers use and moving content work to your own team. Phase the features that do not take money, such as loyalty schemes and wishlists, into a second release once the store has three months of sales data.

  • Start with the sellers. Launch with the 20 to 40 products that earn most of your revenue. BuiltFound's estimator includes up to 40 products at no extra charge.
  • Build for phones first. Test checkout on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data before launch. Our guide to mobile-first web design for Africa covers page weight and testing.
  • Keep WhatsApp beside the store. Some buyers want to ask a question before they pay. Our guide to WhatsApp AI chatbots for Ghana businesses sets out the options and their costs.
  • Match the support tier to the store. BuiltFound's basic tier at GH¢ 200 to 500 a month suits a theme store with few plugins. A store with custom integrations needs the standard or premium tier.
  • Decide who pays the fee. Hubtel lets a business absorb its fee or pass it to the customer, and Flutterwave sets the customer to pay charges by default. Make the choice before launch and show any charge at checkout.

How do you brief an agency for a fixed e-commerce quote?

Brief an agency with your product count, payment methods, delivery areas and launch date, and ask for a fixed price against a written scope. A quote built on those four facts can be compared line by line with two others. Without them, a GHS 6,000 quote and a GHS 40,000 quote can describe two different stores.

  1. State the store's goal in one line, such as "sell 200 orders a month to buyers in Accra and Kumasi".
  2. Give the product count, the variants per product and who supplies the photos and the text.
  3. List the payment methods you need: MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, AT Money, local cards and international cards.
  4. Name the delivery areas and how orders pass to riders or couriers.
  5. Name the systems the store must connect to, such as stock, accounting or WhatsApp.
  6. Ask for the build price, the support price per month and a list of what you own at handover: domain, hosting, gateway account, code and admin logins.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build an online store in Ghana for under GHS 5,000?
Published prices say yes for a template store. Ghana Web Designs lists e-commerce from Ghc2,000 and BuiltFound from GH¢ 3,500. Expect a theme, a small catalogue and your own photos and text at that price, and budget hosting and support on top.
How much does Paystack charge per sale in Ghana?
The Ghana pricing page Paystack publishes lists 1.95% on local and international payments, with no setup fee, and settles to your bank or mobile money account on the next working day. A GHS 200 order costs GHS 3.90 in fees.
Do I need a .com.gh domain for an online store?
No. A .com works. BuiltFound lists .com.gh at GH¢ 400 to 800 a year against GH¢ 170 to 190 for a .com. Pick the name your customers will remember and register it in your company's name.
How much should I budget each month to run an online store?
On BuiltFound's ranges, hosting, SSL, a .com domain and standard support cost about GHS 652 to GHS 1,291 a month before gateway fees. Add 1.95% to 2.6% of sales for the gateway, which is GHS 975 to GHS 1,300 on GHS 50,000 of sales.
Can a Ghana store take payment from customers abroad?
Yes. Paystack's Ghana page says international cards are charged and settled in cedis by default, at 1.95%. Flutterwave charges 4.8% on international cards. Price in cedis unless your gateway and your lawyer confirm another setup.
How long does it take to build an online store in Ghana?
Kolonell's 6 August 2026 guide gives 10 to 15 days for a starter store, 3 to 5 weeks for a growth store and 6 to 9 weeks for premium. Tribal House brand and website projects ship in four to eight weeks.
Who pays the payment gateway fee, the store or the customer?
That depends on the gateway. Hubtel lets the business absorb its fee or pass it on. Flutterwave sets the customer to pay by default and lets the merchant change it. The Paystack calculator shows its fee taken from the amount the customer pays.
