Why work with a design studio in Accra, Ghana?
The short answer
The case for a design studio in Accra rests on four facts: Accra keeps GMT all year, Ghana has 24.3 million internet users, remote reviews follow a fixed weekly rhythm and Tribal House publishes its starting prices.
Hiring a studio in another country raises three practical questions about meeting times, review rules and cost. A brand or website project runs for weeks, and a gap in any of the three slows the whole job.
Tribal House is a brand and web design studio at 1st Crescent Link, Asylum Down, in Accra. We founded it in 2016 and work with clients in Ghana, West Africa, Africa, North America and Europe. This post answers the three questions with sourced figures and our own working terms.
Why work with a design studio in Accra?
A design studio in Accra gives you a team on GMT, a home market with 24.3 million internet users and, at Tribal House, public starting prices. We run remote projects through written scopes, asynchronous reviews and weekly syncs. The sections below give the figures and the cases where a studio near you is the better choice.
We make no claim about what companies in other countries do when they hire. The facts here are about Accra, about the time zone you share with us and about the terms we publish.
What time zone does Accra use, and does it change?
Accra uses Greenwich Mean Time, UTC+00:00, and Ghana does not use daylight saving time today. Wikipedia lists a single IANA entry for Ghana, Africa/Accra, with the same +00:00 value in both the offset and the daylight columns. Ghana observed daylight saving under British colonial rule, in 1919 to 1942 and 1950 to 1956.
Wikipedia's page on Greenwich Mean Time lists Ghana among the places that keep UTC+00:00 for the full year, together with Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Togo, Senegal, Mali, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The IANA time zone database files Ghana under the Africa/Abidjan zone, which runs on GMT and carries no daylight saving rule.
The practical result is a fixed reference point. Our hours do not move in March or October. The shift comes from your side of the call, so the overlap table below changes when your clocks change and not ours.
How much of your working day overlaps with Accra?
Overlap runs from 8 hours with London in winter to 0 hours with the US Pacific zone. The table counts the hours that fall inside 09:00 to 17:00 on both clocks. It is our arithmetic from the sourced UTC offsets and ignores lunch breaks and public holidays.
| Your location | UTC offset, Nov to Mar | Shared hours, Nov to Mar | UTC offset, Apr to Oct | Shared hours, Apr to Oct |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accra (Ghana) | UTC+0 | 8 | UTC+0 | 8 |
| Lagos (Nigeria) | UTC+1 | 7 | UTC+1 | 7 |
| Johannesburg (South Africa) | UTC+2 | 6 | UTC+2 | 6 |
| Nairobi (Kenya) | UTC+3 | 5 | UTC+3 | 5 |
| London (UK) | UTC+0 | 8 | UTC+1 | 7 |
| Central Europe (CET and CEST) | UTC+1 | 7 | UTC+2 | 6 |
| US Eastern (for example New York) | UTC-5 | 3 | UTC-4 | 4 |
| US Central (for example Chicago) | UTC-6 | 2 | UTC-5 | 3 |
| US Pacific (for example Los Angeles) | UTC-8 | 0 | UTC-7 | 1 |
Wikipedia gives the 2026 dates for the changes. Summer time in the UK and the EU runs from 29 March to 25 October. In the United States it runs from 8 March to 1 November. In the weeks between those dates, the UK and the US sit on different offsets. Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya keep one offset all year, according to Wikipedia's pages on time in each country.
London and Central Europe share a full working day with Accra. The US Eastern morning is the Accra afternoon: 09:00 in New York is 14:00 in Accra in winter and 13:00 in summer. A team on the Pacific coast shares no more than one working hour with us, so live calls there need an early start or a late finish on one side.
Three example slots show how the table turns into a calendar. Each assumes the weekly sync lasts one hour and sits inside the shared hours.
- London, summer: 10:00 in London is 09:00 in Accra. The same slot in winter is 10:00 in both cities.
- New York, winter: 10:00 in New York is 15:00 in Accra. In summer, 10:00 in New York is 14:00 in Accra.
- Nairobi, all year: 12:00 in Nairobi is 09:00 in Accra, which leaves the Nairobi afternoon free for review work.
What does a design studio in Accra offer?
Tribal House offers strategy, brand identity, website design and development, motion, digital products, mobile apps, AI assistants and automation, and ongoing creative support. One team handles the work, with no handoffs between agencies. The full list sits on our services page.
- Brand and strategy. Positioning and identity work such as Brassica Pay, where we positioned a payments product for West Africa, and Consar, where we brought construction, real estate and development lines under one identity.
- Websites and digital products. Builds such as Silver Star Auto, a model-led site for a vehicle distributor in Ghana, and Akka Kappa, where property pages draw on a CRM through a custom connector.
- Motion and ongoing support. Explainer videos and logo reveals in the projects record, plus a monthly retainer for design and development work after launch.
Several of those clients operate in Ghana, and the studio works in the same country. A team based in Ghana sees the market conditions and mobile habits that a Ghana audience lives with. For a brief about another market, the research stage covers the gap.
How many people in Ghana are online?
DataReportal reports 24.3 million internet users in Ghana at the start of 2025, a penetration rate of 69.9 percent. The same report counts 38.3 million mobile connections, equal to 110 percent of the population, and 7.95 million social media user identities, or 22.9 percent. The report appeared on 3 March 2025.
The mobile figure is a reason to treat the phone screen as the main screen of a Ghana brief. A team in Accra can try a site on the phones and connections its customers carry, which is a practical advantage for a Ghana brief and no help for a brief about a market elsewhere.
How does work run with a remote client?
Work runs on a written scope, asynchronous reviews and a weekly sync. You comment in one place, each revision round carries a deadline and we sign an NDA before work starts if you need one. The steps below show the order for a brand and website project.
- Discovery call. A 30-minute call to hear the goal, the audience and the date you need.
- Written scope and fee. We send both after the call. Scope changes later go through a written change order that you approve first.
- Kickoff and first payment. Projects are invoiced in three stages, and 40% falls due at kickoff.
- Weekly syncs and asynchronous reviews. Book the sync inside the shared hours in the table above. Review work on your own schedule before each deadline.
- Production and second payment. 40% falls due during production.
- Final delivery and third payment. 20% falls due at final delivery. Handover includes Loom walkthroughs, a CMS guide and a launch checklist.
- Support window. A 30 to 60 day window follows launch, and we fix bugs found inside it at no extra cost. A monthly retainer covers longer support.
A weekly sync needs one hour of overlap. The Pacific zone, at 0 or 1 shared hours, can hold one if one side moves its day. Reviews need no overlap, because comments wait in one place until you read them.
What does a design studio in Accra cost?
Tribal House publishes its starting prices: a project sprint from US$2,500, a brand and website engagement from US$6,000 and a monthly retainer from US$1,500. Ghana-based clients receive quotes in cedis, North American and global clients in US dollars, and European clients in euros or pounds.
| Option | Starts at | What it covers | Typical timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Project sprint | US$2,500 | One defined outcome: a brand system, landing page, positioning sprint, motion assets or launch cleanup | Can start within a week if there is capacity |
| Brand and website | US$6,000 | Strategy, identity, website design and build, CMS setup and launch | Ships in four to eight weeks; books out two to four weeks ahead |
| Monthly retainer | US$1,500 per month | Ongoing creative support, invoiced monthly in advance | Ongoing |
Design work is time-based and not refundable. A scope change needs a written change order that you approve first. Our guide to website cost in Ghana sets these numbers beside the price ranges that Ghanaian agencies publish, and our plans page lists the options.
How do you test a studio in Accra before you commit?
Test a studio on its record, its written terms and its meeting habits before you sign. Four checks take one call and a few emails, and they apply to a studio in any city, including ours. Run them on each studio on your shortlist, and compare the answers side by side.
- Read the project record. Open the case studies and check that the work resembles your brief in scale and sector. Ours sit on the projects page.
- Ask for a written scope and fee. The document should list the deliverables, the number of revision rounds and the payment stages.
- Ask where comments live. One place for comments keeps approvers from reviewing an old version.
- Ask who holds the domain, hosting and files. Register them in your own name and add the studio as a user.
Our guide to hiring an African design studio extends the list to studios across the continent.
When is a studio near you the better choice?
A local studio fits better when the work needs people in the same room, when your team must talk daily in your own morning or when your buyer expects a supplier in your city. The list below gives our judgement. None of it comes from a survey.
- You want workshops in one room. We work from Accra, so each session happens on a call. A studio in your city can fill a meeting room, which suits some boards and leadership teams.
- The work needs on-site production. Photography at your premises, event design or physical installations need people on location.
- Your team works Pacific hours. The table shows 0 to 1 shared hours. Daily live calls would cost one side its early morning or late evening.
- Your buyer sets a local-supplier rule. Check your procurement policy before you shortlist a studio abroad.
- Your budget sits below a studio's starting price. A single freelancer or a template may fit, and our guide to choosing a web design company in Accra lists the questions to ask either way.
If none of those applies, the working model above covers a project from first call to handover. Our post on how to hire an African design studio covers the same decision for studios across the continent. To start, contact us at hello@tribalhousestudios.com; we reply within one business day.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Accra change its clocks for daylight saving?
- No. Accra uses Greenwich Mean Time, UTC+00:00, for the whole year. Wikipedia notes that Ghana observed daylight saving under British colonial rule, in 1919 to 1942 and 1950 to 1956, and does not use it today.
- What is the time difference between Accra and New York?
- Accra is 5 hours ahead of US Eastern time in winter, when New York is on UTC-5. It is 4 hours ahead in summer, when New York is on UTC-4. In 2026 the US switches on 8 March and 1 November.
- What is the time difference between Accra and London?
- None in winter, when both sit on UTC+0. London moves to UTC+1 for summer time, so Accra runs 1 hour behind London from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. In 2026 that is 29 March to 25 October.
- Does Tribal House work with clients outside Ghana?
- Yes. Tribal House works with clients in Ghana, West Africa, Africa, North America and Europe, fully remote. Ghana-based clients are quoted in cedis, North American and global clients in US dollars, and European clients in euros or pounds.
- How do reviews work across time zones?
- Reviews are asynchronous: you leave comments in one place before each deadline, and each revision round carries its own deadline. A weekly sync handles live questions, and we book it inside the hours that both clocks share.
- How are payments split on a project?
- Projects are invoiced in three stages: 40% at kickoff, 40% during production and 20% at final delivery. Retainers are invoiced monthly in advance. Design work is time-based and not refundable.
- Can I get an NDA before sharing information?
- Yes. Tribal House signs an NDA before work starts if the client needs one. Raise it on the discovery call or in your first message to hello@tribalhousestudios.com.
